Wollongong University Case Study

Pathways

External Pathways

Wollongong University, known for its rich landscape of native bushland integrated with learning centres and residential facilities, seeks to enhance the safety and aesthetics of its campus through the replacement of 500 pathway lights. This program aims to improve walkability by increasing the brightness of walkways while minimising light pollution and reduce the embedded substantial ongoing maintenance of replacing globes.

Objectives

  • Enhance Campus Safety: Increase the brightness of pathways to ensure safe passage for students, staff, and visitors, particularly during evening hours.

  • Reduce Light Pollution: Implement lighting solutions that minimise light spillage and preserve the natural ambiance of the native bushland.

  • Improve Energy Efficiency: Replace existing lights with energy-efficient alternatives to reduce operational costs and carbon footprint.

  • Enhance Campus Aesthetics: Maintain the university's commitment to an attractive and welcoming environment.

Implementation Plan

  • Lighting Design and Installation: Working closely with the facilities and safety teams, the Lowa Energy Solutions delivery team implemented an installation schedule that ensured a seamless transition.

  • Recycling Management: All old fixtures were sorted into plastics and metals for efficient recycling.

  • Selection of Lighting Technology: Energy-efficient, low-light pollution LED lighting fixtures were chosen.

  • Installation: Zoned installation was carried out to minimise disruption to campus activities.

Conclusion

Lowa Energy Solutions Design Team collaborated closely with Wollongong University's facilities to enhance pathway lighting. The previous lighting used a globe design with an opaque diffuser, resulting in under-lit areas and significant light pollution. Lowa addressed this issue by introducing the V-Top lighting fixture, which features a 360-degree radius that directs light towards the ground, effectively eliminating skyward light pollution.

By undertaking this initiative, Wollongong University will continue to be a leading example of how educational institutions can harmonise technological advancements with environmental stewardship and community well-being.
